The Albert Einstein Memorial 8 [map] (www.nasonline.org; daily 24hrs; free) is in an elm and holly grove located behind the National Academy of Sciences Building. The bronze statue, 12ft (3.6 meters) high, features Einstein sprawled on a bench, holding a sheaf of papers which show the mathematical equations of three of his most important scientific contributions – the photoelectric effect, the theory of relativity, and E=MC2. At the statue’s base, there is a 28ft (8.5-meter) field of emerald granite, which is embedded with more than 2,700 metal studs. Those represent the planets, sun, moon, stars, and other celestial objects as they were positioned on April 22, 1979, when the memorial was dedicated.

1 Bison Bistro

Department of the Interior Building; $

This is a typical government building cafeteria that primarily serves employees. Because there are no other lunch spots nearby, the menu is better than most such eateries. There’s a rotating weekly menu, with more healthy options than you might expect.
